New York State’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) and AT&T are challenging developers to show off their skills while solving real-world problems and enhancing the transit experience of MTA’s 8.5 million daily riders. App Quest 2013 consists of an intensive weekend-long hackathon on May 4 in New York City, and a three month global challenge open to app developers from around the world.

Challenge Eligibility:

  • Participants: Individuals at least 18 years of age at the time of entry; Teams of eligible individuals; Organizations (up to 50 employees).
  • Large Organization Participants: Organizations with over 50 employees may compete for the non-cash Large Organization Recognition Award.

Challenge Submission Requirements:

  • What to create: (1) a functioning mobile app which uses at least one MTA data set or API; (2) a Youtube or Vimeo video demonstrating your working app; (3) one or more screenshots of your app; and (4) access to your app for testing/judging, such as a URL, installation file or shared test build.
  • Platforms:  Android, Blackberry, iOS, Windows Phone, and mobile web.
  • New & Existing Apps: Apps may be newly created or pre-existing. If the app existed prior to the start of the competition, you must include a new or additional MTA data set and/or API and add new features or functionality to your app after the start of the competition.

How to enter

  1. Click “Register” to sign up.
  2. Visit MTA’s Developer pages to access MTA public datasets and APIs.
  3. Visit the AppQuest Resources page to check out AT&T APIs, the MTA Wish List, and other great resources.
  4. Create a working mobile app for Android, Blackberry, iOS, Windows Phone, or mobile web that uses at least one MTA data set and/or the MTA API. If your application is not newly created for the competition, it must include new MTA data sets/APIs and new features and functionality added after May 4, 2013.
  5. Provide a way for us to access your app by including an installation file with your submission, sharing a test build, or by providing a URL where your app can be accessed free of charge for testing and judging. 
  6. Confirm you have read and agree to the Official Rules and submit your app by completing the submission form, where you will be asked to provide: 1) access to your app for testing (URL, installation file, or shared test build); 2) screenshots of your working app; 3) a video (YouTube or Vimeo) that shows the key features and functionality of your working app.

    Includes creativity and originality of the idea, and potential to improve the travel experience for MTA riders.
  • Implementation of Idea
    Includes how well the idea was executed by the developer and how well the app integrates with the MTA public data and APIs.
  • Potential Impact
    Includes the extent to which the submission will impact MTA customers and their travel experience.
